The Myth of the Two-Income Family

The Myth of the Two-Income Family raises some interesting thoughts:

*two-incomes today are equivalent to one income in the 1970s (with some caveats);

*the United States is “shockingly behind” the rest of industrialized nations in terms of maternity care and parental leave; and

*yet there is just about total silence in Academia and beyond on the issue.

  1. Academia, like the media, like the blogosphere, has a tendency to get hung up on trends, crazes, buzzwords, and the like when it ought to be bringing to light important matters like these. We all love to pile on and kind of navel gaze a little at times and that’s an impulse we need to fight against, in my opinion.
