Average Raise?

A reader is curious to know if his small raise is a sign of the times (or a sign of his company).
Would anyone want to share the average raise in percent that he or she received this year? You can do it anonymously, of course, in comments.
I’ll go first. I received no raise this year. I suppose I should give myself one, but that’s not really how it works when you’re self-employed.
I changed titles and ended up with a $400/mo. raise. I work at a state university

Comment by Ms. Theologian 07.16.08 @ 12:50 pmGot 4.6 percent last year. Paralegal at a medium-sized law firm.
Comment by Chalicechick 07.16.08 @ 1:32 pm4.5 for the past two years
Comment by kaleigh 07.16.08 @ 1:39 pmThanks, dudes!
Comment by Ms. Theologian 07.16.08 @ 1:53 pmI’m the one who originated the inquiry. I got a 1.25% increase, which I think is absolutely terrible given inflation, especially since the company has been doing rather well (~50% increase in net income since Q2 last year).
Comment by C 07.16.08 @ 3:46 pmIt seems like I’ve heard 3-5% here (and elsewhere) from my former corporate life. Of course, did you find out if others also got the 1.25%? I’d be curious to know if there were a bunch of folks with a 7% raise if I was at 1.25%….
Comment by Ms. Theologian 07.16.08 @ 3:53 pmI got a 4% Cost of Living Adjustment, and then a small performance raise on top of that (one pay grade, which I’m too tired to figure out the percentage on right now). But this is only because the high muckety-mucks at the educational institute where I work rearranged their own raises so that we lowly peons could get ours - I live in Nevada, where the Governor called an emergency session to cancel all government employee COLA raises (except his own, I suspect, but I may just be feeling bitchy).
C, yes, that seems like a very low increase.
Comment by SC 07.16.08 @ 5:09 pmThe people I manage average about 1.8-2.5% for the lowest rated workers (or, people who got a promotion the previous year, see below) and around 5-8% for the highest rated. Promotions get you anywhere from 8% to even higher (I have recently handed out an 18% and a 20%, but those were very big promotions and to get people up to an appropriate salary level for the position. As stated before, they make up for it the next year by only giving a token raise unless they did something tremendous…)
I might note that I have nothing to do with the raise rate. I just write the reviews and HR wrangles with my boss’s boss for the %.
Also this was for last October, we don’t have reviews again for another several months.
This is at a privately held international market research firm.
Comment by Anonymous 07.16.08 @ 6:20 pmEveryone got $1200 cost of living and no bonuses. It sucks since the last 5 years were merit increases. Kinda makes one not want to work as hard.
Comment by Anonymous 07.16.08 @ 7:06 pmwhere i work, they don’t give us a christmas bonus, they hold all our annual leave loading for the year, and pay it in a lump sum in December - that is very pathetic, cos it’s our money and should be paid whenever we take leave, but they pay it in Dec so it looks like we’re getting a xmas bonus
we get approx 1.5% raise per annum if the funding is there . . .
considering I have increased their enrolments and income in the past 2 years, that is pathetic - which is why i’m interviewing in second rounds tomorrow for another job
wish me luck
Comment by Kel 07.17.08 @ 2:04 amKel: Best of luck with getting a better job. In this market many people (me) stay in the same job since it is somewhat secure. Unfortunately that leaves us at the whim of our employers as to how they are going to disburse the moneys.
Comment by Anonymous 07.17.08 @ 7:05 amMs. T, I went from $26/hr to $27.50/hr last year (our raises happen in December). However, I went from $20/hr to $26/hr in 2006 because I kicked butt on my project and passed my architectural licensing exams.
Comment by Mile High Pixie 07.17.08 @ 7:26 pmI feel awkward asking coworkers about their raises. It seems like the culture is against asking and discussing such things.
Comment by C 07.17.08 @ 9:41 pmI got 4% each year when I worked at a doctor’s office.
C- it is awkward to ask coworkers about raises, many companies even forbid people to talk about salaries. though it seems less scary to ask for raise percentage, as it doesn’t actually reveal salary, its still weird!
