Weird Workplace News

Red StaplerHello everybody! Happy First Day of Summer to you all. Though, for us east coasters, summer started last week with that terrible heat wave. I have to say, I do miss the California summers. This is because I did not live in the desert as Ms T does.

Anyway, on with the show.

Studies–The More You Know: 60% of Canadian workers say they use the office printer for personal print jobs. In other news, 40% of Canadian workers are lying about personal use of office equipment.

Meanwhile, 1 in 3 IT workers admit to snooping on co-workers. I’m not surprised–at my last job, someone was fired for snooping on the CEO. And then two years later, the company snooped on their own workers and fired six other people for activities while on the job. Turnabout is fair play? (Snoop snoop snoop, why does that word sound so weird?)

And in Britain, 189,000 teenagers are not in school, work, or training–almost one in ten British teens. Ah, youth.

Animals and McDonald’s–It’s not what you think: So this is weird–two unrelated stories about animals running around loose at McDonalds. A chicken hung out around the Temecula location for four months before finally being captured. Note that it was not made into McNuggets because we all know they aren’t really made of chicken. And a bear cub was spotted in the drive through lane in South Brunswick, NJ. He just wanted a burger.

Diversity in the Workplace: Diversity in crimes, that is.  Parking enforcement ain’t all about zipping around in those spiffy little cab thingies. It can be dangerous, too. A doctor practicing, oh, about eight miles from my house was nailed by his employees when a bill for a hidden camera that looks like an air purifier arrived at the office. A hedge fund manager who committed fraud then faked suicide–because he didn’t want to set a bad example for his son. And in a sign of the times, some idiot robbed a lemonade stand.

Over There:  Check out this story about a Chinese restaurant in Baghdad. I’m actually intrigued about what kind of food they concoct with local ingredients. And, my favorite story of the week is a controversy over pink shoes. I can’t believe that a pair of pink stilettos could make people so froth-at-the-mouthy. Some excellent commentary at Smart Bitches on the desexualization of the military.

Let’s End With Some Religious News:  I’m breaking with tradition and not making education a separate category this week. But there’s still some crazy teacher news. This one is accused of branding his students with flaming crosses. A minister who pushed to have a nativity scene added to a holiday display was caught lying about goods taken in a robbery. Not that one has anything to do with the other. A Sikh is suing Disney because they wouldn’t hire him because he didn’t fit the “Disney look.” He’ll actually probably lose because Disney considers its employees actors and there is some gray area when it comes to looks discrimination in the acting profession. And finally, an interesting article about discrimination in the workplace, this time in regards to wearing pants. It makes no mention of certain conservative Christian sects which have similar rules.

Okay, my husband is getting antsy so I’m off to dinner. Have a great weekend everybody! And write to us at survivingtheworkday at gmail dot com.

As a 4th generation Californian, this is the only time I remember having rain on Summer Solstice.

Where is this rain? It’s like 98 here at 8 p.m. outside of LA. I’d pay for rain….

North of Pt. Arena. About 650 miles north of you. It got weird and muggy earlier and then thunderstorms.

It rains ALL THE TIME in the summer here (last night, for example, while we were out to dinner and the hatch to our roof was open…) But that doesn’t make it any cooler. Just muggier.
