Women and Yogurt

Here’s a funny overview of how yogurt is marketed towards women, in particular, women who wear hoodies and have master’s degrees.

I am wearing a hoodie, and have a master’s degree, but fight the urge to eat the Yogurt.

And what the heck is “bifidus regularis”, anyhow? Sounds like the manufacturers went to a focus group to find out what people/women would prefer as a term to mean “help with this damned constipation”. “Irregularity” is a little too frank for a lot of people/women, so they substitute “digestive upsets”? I thought the video was hilarious, by the way! But I’m really turned off by the made up vocabulary of those who want to combat constipation and stubborn bowel tracts.

Oh, check it out, “bifidus regularis” is literally a type of brand name bacteria.

I used to eat yogurt when I taught high school, but I found that the amount of sugar in a single Yoplait was so high that I would crash the next class period.

That host is fabulous.

I love yogurt, eat it every weekday lunch. But literally every single yogurt in this town’s grocery stores is nonfat, which is disgusting. Plus it all has nasty gelatin in it. Not to mention the ground up bugs.

I think we need to move to Europe. Everything has less sugar in it. Including the Yoplait.

Hubby and I talk about these ads, gay men that we are. Between the cloying sweetness and the plastic refuse, I’m about ready to go back to my grandmother’s favorite: buttermilk, on cornbread, with onions. Try marketing that.

And my arms are too long for hoodies anyway.

That was hilarious. I had noticed the yogurt-for-women ads on tv really ramped up in the last year. I have digestive issues, and eat yogurt sometimes, but I wonder about a few things: a) 1/4 of white Americans and 3/4 of non white Americans are lactose intolerant - so maybe they shouldn’t be eating all that dairy b) why do we need “special” yogurts for good bacteria? If it’s a high quality yogurt it should already have good bacteria c) who the hell eats a six ounce cup of yogurt as a “meal”? d) is yogurt supposed to be the new ice cream?

GhostGirl Ground up bugs?

Scott, I bet your grandmother would approve of prunes for digestive issues too. I’m not sure why they’re not more popular even as “dried plums”.

And Hafidha, I thought the same thing when it came to lactose intolerance. Maybe many of those with digestive issues are really lactose intolerant. Yogurt is supposed to be one of the better dairy foods for mildly lactose intolerant, hence I can eat a bit, but if you are really lactose intolerant, it is a world of pain!

I’m left wondering if what they are selling is female friendship of some sort….

Yummy…

This is the only yogurt I can tolerate now: http://www.stonyfield.com/OurProducts/WholeMilkYogurt.cfm

Cream at the top (on the whole milk kind at least… oh my god it’s good), and they use beet juice not bugs. 19g of sugar instead of Yoplait’s 27g (!!!) Dannon All Natural is comparable with the sugar–but not their Fruit at the Bottom line, that’s 27g too.

Oh, those bugs are in some makeup too! Yummy.

Yeah with aiming for less than 40 grams of sugar a day, it’s hard to eat most yogurts. I’m telling you…it was killing me teaching after eating a Yoplait.
