Greenwashed Snacks

This is kind of a fun graphic from Good Magazine. You can see that most “organic” snack brands sold in big supermarkets have giant parent companies with names you’ve heard of. The great tragedy of my life occurred several years ago when I found out from a friend that Seeds of Change is really owned by M&M/Mars. Not the end of the world, but I prefer to buy from Johnny’s Seeds now. Just don’t tell me they’re owned by Halliburton. Please.

Kind of makes buying organic pre-packaged food from the store a rather pointless exercise I guess.

Yeah, it’s not necessarily a way to support a “small” business, though if you want organic choices available, you do have to keep buying them or seek out others.

Very interesting. My husband wouldn’t buy Gerber organic baby food for our baby, because he preferred not to support big companies. Earth’s Best-> Hain Celestial -> Heinz isn’t tiny. Though I’m not sure what “strategic alliance” between Heinz and Hain really means…

Gets back to one law I would love to see happen: All products have to use the parent company logo, in addition to the brand logo. I think that simple law would change the way people see the food in Grocery Stores, and really, in all stores.

It seems to me that we really don’t label food compared to other products. Why can I tell you my shirt is made in Indonesia, but not where my breakfast cereal came from? Just wrong.
