I wonder what Cary would have said if this woman had said, "they are Haitian" or some other non European nationality. Would he have been so patient? I don't know. I grew up knowing people who believed in the Evil Eye, and Muslims still say "Masha Allah" after complimenting a baby because otherwise people might think you are coveting and trying to steal the baby's breath or something wacky like this.
