Again, I abuse my blog for free market research.

    done! One thing I wanted to mention that I remember reading somewhere (I think it was in the Pitcairn natural health for dog and cat book) that stainless steel bowls are not good for animals. I stopped using mine after I read that.

    Oh! I’ve been googling it too. If you find a reference, please let me know. There are just some big health/environmental issues with plastics and ceramics. Of course, in cold climates, stainless can cause tongue freezing problems, but dogs tend to be smarter than humans with letting their tongue stick.

    It’s interesting to see the survey results, as we have some guesses as to what people think they want, but it’s only coming about 50% true.

    I only have cats, but we were told to get rid of the plastic bowls because they cause acne on the chin–they retain the oils too much.

    I now use old (human food) ceramic plates and bowls and they’re fine.

    Yeah, plastic bowls for pets aren’t a great idea (Cat acne = cacne?). Plus there’s all the stuff that’s in plastic (biphenol something or other). I think ceramic is okay, but with glazes and China, we wanted to stay away from breakable items for shipping reasons and glazes for health reasons.

    My thoughts–a variety of toys is a good idea, because not every dog likes every kind of toy. Also, stay away from products that the owners probably already have (e.g., a leash, a blankie) and don’t necessarily need more of. You ALWAYS need more Nature’s Miracle, toys, treats, and poop bags! Finally, maybe customize the bags by size/coat of dog? I haven’t shampooed or brushed Milo in two years; his coat is so short I can just wipe him off with a towel.

    That’s a good idea about the stuff people start out with (hopefully). I’m a big fan of Nature’s Miracle, though we had to use it for a cat.

    What is Nature’s Miracle? I don’t have any pets, but when I filled out that survey I thought about things that pet owners would need to replace semi-regularly. I know balls and toys get lost/smooshed/busted; treats get eaten of course, and poop bags … probably go in the trash at some point. I like the idea of special event gifts - things that recognize the dog’s milestones or milestones in the family (like a new home, birthday, adoption day, graduation from training school, etc.). I don’t know what other kind of milestones occur in a dog’s life, to be honest.

    Nature’s Miracle is an odor remover for cleaning up accidents.
