Background checks include Myspace and Facebook
Posted by editor at 10:31 am in workplace notes
My friend The Headhunter just told me that a background search on a job candidate will now automatically search Myspace and Facebook as well as the more standard federal, state, and county searches. Of course, I’ve always assumed that Myspace and Facebook were pretty much open to anyone who wanted to look, including future employers, but knowing it’s become part of the standard search is another reason to be careful about what you post.

That is why parents should share that with their college age kids… what you do in college now doesn’t stay in college. Sad. Youth was so fun before the internet.

Almost everyone I know who has a Facebook or MySpace account has privacy settings on it; you can’t view their page unless/until you’re friends.

I don’t know, I’ve seen plenty of stuff (drunken photos, breasts, etc.) that would make me not hire someone. I think many of us protect with the settings, but I’m not sure everyone does or knows why they should.

Well, yes, there are those pages, and those folks. I don’t know what those folks are thinking. Then again, I can’t imagine letting other people take photos of my breasts in the first place. Of course, I’m not 17 years old, either. *sigh*
