Newsweek has career advice for the characters on The Office (I suppose this is what happens with a mockumentary—we take it absolutely seriously). Good stuff here.
- What to do with a boss like Michael Scott (advice for all of us who deal with a narcissistic incompetent boss)
- Management Tips Dwight Schrute Could Use (advice for those of us who hope to move up to management, but never quite get there)
- Jim Halpert and the First Job Trap (advice for those of us who seem trapped by our first (or much later) job and are unable to leave despite knowing we must)
- How Pam Beesly Can Find a Dream Job (advice for those of who labor in jobs we hate while dreaming of making our hobbies into jobs)
- Ways to Reboot Your Career Mid-Life (advice for those of us who are laid-off mid-career)
The characters from “The Office” are pretty much the office commedia dell’arte after all.

Ah, yes, commedia dell’arte, I agree, though apparently nothing on The Office is improvised; it just looks that way. I know I’ve been managed by Michael Scott though.
Comment by Ms. Theologian 03.21.08 @ 10:42 amI meant that it is a bunch of stock characters.

Like, you know how there are certain specifically academic stereotypes that you see at every University, and when you are meeting people in a new academic department, you say to yourself “Oh, you’re THAT guy.”
The Office has lots of fun with those office archtypes that are pretty universal. I’ve worked with lots of Pams and Stanleys.
Comment by Chalicechick 03.21.08 @ 12:55 pmI’ve been managed by more Michael Scotts than I deserve. I finally decided I must actually seek them out because they remind me of certain familial relationships.
