Workplace Generational Differences

Colleen at Arbitrary Marks writes about generational values in her Generation Y classroom, which got me thinking about generational differences in the workplace again.
One of the best overviews of generational differences at work is Mixing and Managing Four Generations of Employees, which, as the title suggests, incorporates all four generations (not just the Baby Boomers and Generation X).
This table is from the article. And while we know that generalizations always leave some people out, I’ve found this information helpful, if only in understanding my parents’ attitudes (Veterans) to my generation (Generation X) about work.

A fascinating chart.
I find myself kind of a mishmash. I have some traits inherited from my baby boomer parents, a few inherited from my Veteran grandparents, their parents, but I am very much of my era in many respects. Although I am kind of on the end of the Gen X spectrum and kind of straddle the gap between X and Y.
My youngest sister is very much a child of Gen Y.

In some ways, I find the greatest contrasts for me are with the generation ahead and behind.
Comment by Ms. Theologian 03.13.08 @ 12:55 pmI find that I take advantages of technology like Gen Y, but most of the rest is Gen X, except for what motivates and rewards me, which is kind of a Gen Y/Baby Boomer mishmash.
Interesting.
Comment by GhostGirl 03.13.08 @ 2:53 pmMs T, you make a good point about texting vs emailing. As I move up in the ranks, a Gen X’er infiltrating the ranks of older Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers, I find that direct phone calls or visits to a desk are sometimes the best way to deal with people. Funny, most people regardless of generation, but especially the younger generations, have problems with confrontation. If you can confront without being confrontational, you’ve mastered an immeasurable skill.
