Southwest, Young Women, and Appropriatenesss

Do you remember last summer Southwest asking women who were “dressed inappropriately” to leave the planes?

Now there’s more of that sort of behavior. Again with young women. Again on Southwest. I really don’t get this. I just don’t.

I watched the video; it sounds like the women were saying that they were kicked off for being “too pretty” - not for being scantily clad. I’ve seen so many young women who look like them and dress like them on SW Airlines, that I’m just confused.

Yeah, we don’t have a statement from Southwest abou the actual reason. And I don’t think their “we’re pretty” statements helped their case, but it seems to have the same pattern as the other incidents with young women being told that they’re out of line by Southwest.

We’re really only getting one side of the story here. It’s entirely possible that these women were disruptive to the extreme.

I dunno, they sound pretty bratty to me…

Well, I’m not to blame for CNN’s crappy reporting, especially the full-body-pan. And they do seem bratty, but bratty for me doesn’t necessarily translate directly into disruptive enough to be escorted off by police. But I thought this story is distinctly reminiscent of last summer’s story of how women were kicked off the plane because of how they looked. Since this was on CNN, I’m sure we’ll hear from Southwest soon about “disruptive behavior.”

I am outraged at this patently beautist display of inappropriate indignation!

So outraged I am now going to read something else.

CK - I think the term you might be looking for is “lookism.”
