Surviving a Recession
Yes, I’m sorry, but it appears to be time for Tips for Surviving a Recession. I know we don’t want to hear this or think about this, but I sincerely believe it is still happening.
Tips include:
- Build your emergency fund.
- Pay off your credit cards.
- Increase your income, if at all possible.
- Don’t buy a new home without selling the old home.
- Don’t quit your job without finding a new one.
That’s my summary, but there is more at Tips for Surviving a Recession, including things to tighten in the family budget.
My favorite quote from the article deserves to be called out with a snarky reply:
“I have a friend who just lost her job. She is having a ball selling a whole bunch of stuff on eBay, everything from a gold Cartier watch to smaller things,” says Kit Yarrow a marketing and psychology professor at Golden Gate University.
Oh, Kit, I’m sure your friend is “having a ball” selling her possessions on ebay. Perhaps the words just came out wrong? Say it’s so. Please.

Uh, so do you think this is a good time to start a PhD?
I think it’s not a bad idea to stay out of the job market temporarily for your own sanity, if you can swing that, but of course people succeed in all sorts of ways in a recession.
Hmm. So maybe in five years, I’ll burst onto the job market and land a really sweet tenure track position! If I can survive the diminished income in the meantime…
Mmm…maybe.
It seems to me that businesses that deal directly with the public are hit first and hardest by recessions, while academia takes much longer.
Oh no! I just announced on my blog that I’m looking for a job and then I came here and saw your post!!! Doh!
[…] tip to Ms. Theologian (Surviving the Workday) for the article. Oh, and thanks for pointing out the yoga article, too. Sharing that one at Day […]
People find jobs in recessions…I’m just not sure quitting first is necessarily best….did you quit?
Had to look up Cloverfield monster, BinB.
No, I haven’t quit. Luckily I’m not that rash. It just seemed ominous that I read this right after posting. But I also scheduled myself to take the GMAT on the Ides of March so I’m on a roll
Hmm. These sound like sound ideas for all times to me.
I’m just sayin’.
In times of economic prosperity, you’re allowed to be irresponsible?
Perhaps I’m in too-geeky a Day Job. Cloverfield has been an ongoing subject of discussion, complete with an en-masse screening by staff. (I declined.)
